Enterprise Manager Won't Start

All of a sudden, whenever I try to start the SQL Server
Enterprise Manager, I get the following error:
MMC cannot open the file C:\Program File\...\SQL Server
Enterprise Manager.MSC.
This may be because the file does not exist, is not an
MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC.
This may also be because you do not have sufficient
access rights to the file.
I've uninstalled and re-installed SQL Server at least
four times now. I still get the same error. What is
going on? The file exists. I can see it. Please, I
need some insight on this. Help!
Glenn,
Try reapplying the latest SQL Server 2000 service pack. If that doesn't
work try copying SQLEM.MSC from the SQL Server CD (remember to rename it
to Enterprise Manager.msc on your machine).

launch it before renaming it and it worked fine but after I renamed it it
would not open.
As long as I dont rename it to its original name it will launch fine? If
this is a permissions issue then it is easily worked around by just renaming
the file. Not a lot of security here on permissions if that is all it takes
to work around the permissons.

Enterprise Manager Stops Responding

I'm running SQL 2000 Server Standard Edition, SP4 (hotfix - 8.00.2187) on
Windows 2003 Server Standard x64 bit. Whenever I run SQL Enterprise Manager
on the server via RDP, the server stops responding. At this time, when IRDP
another session I dont get the windows login screen...all I get is grey
screen and mouse pointer....it is as if the server is hung. Most of the
times, I have no other option than hard rebooting the server.
What is wrong here?

Enterprise Manager Problem

Suddenly one of my user started seeing one problem.. Whenever he tries
to connect to database and see tables through enterprise manager. Gets
error as shown below.
"An unexpected error happened during this operation.
[MS Design Tools] - You might not have permission to perform this
operation, or the object Administrator might no longer exist in
database."
Though previously there wasn't any problem.. I just droped and
recreated this login with same permission as previously. Even tried
assigning system administrator role to the login but no success.

Enterprise Manager Locks Table

We have just moved a SQL Server database to a new server and since doing
this I have found that a lock is placed on a table whenever it is being
viewed in Enterprise Manager until the table is closed. This has the effect
of stopping our main program from updating the table whislt it is open in
Enterprise Manager. If the table is viewed by including WITH(NOLOCK) in the
select statment then our main program works okay. If the table is viewed
using SQL Anaylser then the table lock does not remain even with the result
set still open. I am not sure if this happens on all tables but the table in
question contains 125,000 rows.
I was not aware of this behavour before (when the database was on another
server) is this normal and is there a way of forcing Enterprise Manager to
include WITH(NOLOCK) by default or is something strange happening?
Thanks
Phil...
Make sure you have proper indexes on the table. Using EM to view data has
never been a recommended way. I have seen the behavior plenty of times when
clients use EM to view the data. Using QA and running regular select
statements is the best way to do that.

I've ran into this problem at various work places.
Another Nemesis is MS Access. You'll have the "Power End Users" of your
organization create Linked Tables from Access to your source SQL data and
get all kinds of contention issues.

SQL EM does not fetch all results at once. It fetches on a as-needed
basis, leaving locks on the server. SQL EM is not recommended for this
type of activity, especially in production. You can verify this behavior
from Profiler.

Enterprise Manager gets closed

Hi,
I am facing a problem in my SQl Server 7.0.
whenever i try to open a table in the Enterprise manager either for viewing
the All Rows or to edit the columns in the design view. Enterprise Manager
Get Closed without any warning. Although Everything seems fine when i try to
access the table from SQL Query Analyzer.
IS it a virus ?
Please advice...
Thanks and regards
jeetu
Can't ever rule out a virus, but is it one particular table or a particular database? Then run "DBCC CHECKDB('database')" and/or "DBCC CHECKTABLE ('table name')" on it.
I also can kill Enterprise Manager, for SQL Server 2000, and also Query Analyzer, by using the Fitaly on-screen keyboard program cursor key actions at the same time as the screen and Keystroke-reading Narrator. Are you using AN Assistive technology?
If EM is running on an NT family machine, is anything recorded in the Event Log? Perhaps if you switch on logging of application events? (Bear with me, the course was years ago.)

Enterprise manager freezing

Hello, My used-to-be-stable SQL server 2000 running on windows 2000 server
has started freezing whenever I make attempt to open the enterprise manager.
It does so at an interval of 1/2- days and the solution at this point is to
restart the machine.
This makes me to restart the machine at an interval of 1-2 days.
Can somebody fix me out.
ThasksIs it only Enterprise Manager that's freezing or is QA freezing as well? Are
there any other programs on the machine that are freezing?
Also, you might want to run a Performance Monitor and a SQL Server Profiler
to verify what is going on when your Enterprise Manager freezes. PerfMon
will tell you if it's a network or hardware issue. Profiler will let you
know if it's a query issue or something related.
And lastly, have you tried re-installing Enterprise Manager? Look for the
SQL Server Enterprise Manager.msc, rename it, then look for the same file on
your SQL Server CD and copy it over to the folder where the renamed msc is.
See if that helps. But only do this if you haven't found anything via
PerfMon or Profiler. This won't help if your problem is
network/hardware/query related. It'll only help if your Enterprise Manager
interface is corrupted.

Enterprise Manager blocks network on XP

I'm running XP SP2 (and all the latest hotfixes) and administer a
bunch of SQL2000 servers. Whenever I have enterprise manager running,
I find that my network access seems to block regularly. What I mean by
that is, If I open Explorer and try to access network drives, explorer
will hang for 10-15 second before responding. The same thing occurs
for other apps that access network drives (open/save dialogs, apps
with directory tree windows, etc).
Is anyone else seeing this same behavior? Any idea how to trace
something like this? It isn't network related according to a sniffer -
it seems more similar to they type of blocking we used to see with old
ODBC-based applications.
Thanks
What happens if you turn off the server state polling in
Enterprise Manager? On the menu go to tools then select
options. Clear the checkbox for Server State Polling on the
General tab.
You'd also want to check the event logs if turning off the
polling makes no difference.

Enterprise Manager - Registrations & Passwords

We have recently brought in a frequent change password policy in our

and it is getting annoying now. Is there anyway around this ?
