Enterprise Mgr. Won't Open

Here's a strange thing: I've had this installed for years, and it was working fine up until last night, after I installed the latest MS security updates.
After re-booting from that installation, I have not been able to open Enterprise Manager. I get an error titled Microsoft Management Console, then it tells me it has encountered a problem and needs to close.
I've uninstalled and re-installed the SQL Server 2000 client tools, but still get the same error. I've worked around it by running mmc.exe and adding the SQL Server snap-in, but would really like to fix this problem.
I can run mmc.exe, but as soon as I try to open SQL Server Enterprise Manager.msc, mmc crashes.
My OS is WinXP pro, sp 1. Anyone have any idea what's going on?
Thanks for any assistance,
Tom
This is getting stranger. I tried renaming the SQL Server Enterprise Manager.MSC to SQLServerEnterpriseManager.MSC, and it opens without any problem.
What's that all about?

|||Hi Tom,
From your description, I understand that you would like to know why your
SQL Server Enterprise Manager crashes after your updating some Windows
Security Updates. Have I understood the issue correctly and completely? If
there is anything I misunderstood, please feel free to let me know.
I would like to collect some information about it
1. Do you use Windows Updates to do some updates and what updates have you
installed?
2. You could find SQLEM.msc from your SQL Server Install Disk and please
copy it to your SQL Client installed disk
(from CDROM\Enterprise\x86\binn\SQLEM.msc to SQLInstalledDisk\80\Tools\Binn
as SQL Server Enterprise Manager.msc)
Try to do this and see whethere it could solve your problems
Thank you for your patience and cooperation. If you have any questions or

|||Michael,
I responded several days ago to your last post, however for some
reason my response was not posted. Here is the gist of it: (I posted
again tonight in the web based group, and the message did not post,
I'm using another newsgroup reader for this post).
I used Windows Update to install the latest security patches (WinXP
Pro).
I did several things, including following your suggestions, however
the only way to open EM was to rename the file. I first accidentally
found this out when I copied the file SQL Server Enterprise
Manager.MSC as test.msc to another directory.
Double clicking that file opened it with no problems. I then renamed
it to SQLServerEnterpriseManager.MSC, and it opened fine. However, if
I try to open it as SQL Server Enterprise Manager.MSC (with the
spaces), I get the error: Microsoft Management Console has encountered
a problem and needs to close.
I can open the file from the installation media (SQLEM.MSC), but as
soon as I rename it to SQL Server Enterprise Manager.MSC I get the
error.
I have no idea why this might be happening.

Based on my knowledge, on a Windows XP machine, the initial launch of SQL
Enterprise Manager creates a file (SQL Server Enterprise Manager) in

Subsequent launches of Enterprise Manager use this file instead of the

Enterprise Mgr to remote database

Hi Guys,
I have a web app hosted on an external box with my dev box here. both use identical SQL2000 backends. What I would like is to have my Enterprise Manager have both servers registered so that I can work from one interface. No probs getting the local one registered, but how do I register the external DB server? It's not in my domain, but I do have an IP address and Administrator rights on the remote box. This is probably simple, but I must be missing something.
Thanks
MikeJust add your external server as linked...|||Umm . . OK.

1. So New Sql Server Registration gives me the Register Wizard.
2. I enter the IP address manually in the Available Servers field and click add. Click Next.
3. So far, so good. Can't use my current Windows Account info (different domain), so I select SQL Server login info and put in SA account details.
4. I get a Connecting dialog then "SQL Server does not exist or access denied - ConnectionOpen - (Connect()"

Sorry if I sound dense, but . . . . .|||Try using the subdomain.domain address construct rather than IP address.

Example:

somesqlservermachinename.domain.com

I've had problems connecting to one of our remote SQL Servers via IP address (odd, since the same server is in the same subnet as two other SQL Servers that I can connect fine using their IP Addresses). But the subdomain construct works just fine.

Enterprise Mgr SQL 2000 doesn't list databases

I have something strange with my Enterprise Manager (SQL 2000). When in my
local server i cannot see my databases. The list is empty. If I go to Query
Analyzer on the same box, I can see all of them. Also in EM, under the
Management folder there is nothing to view. Any ideas what has happened?
Thanks in advance.
Does the registration in Enterprise manager use the same login as the one you
use in Query Analyzer? Does the user you login with to create your
registration have access to all of the tables and the management folder?

|||Yes.
When I try to create a new database through EM I get an arithmetic overflow
error. Do I have something corrupt in the master database? If I try a
'select * from sysdatabases' in the master database I get a row count and an
arithmetic overflow errror. See below.
"(21 row(s) affected)
Server: Msg 220, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Arithmetic overflow error for data type smallint, value = 32789."
This is on a test SQL box, and I am not sure when the problem started. If I
cannot restore the master db from backup is there any way to repair it?
Thanks.

Do you have any databases currently "offline"? Do you also get the
error if you run:

but not if you do:

Bring those databases online, then see if your problem goes away. Take
them offline again, and see if it continues to work after that. I
recall some obscure issue where the "version" column in the master
database gets corrupted when a database is taken offline. I don't

Enterprise Mgr Snap-In Issue

I have been running SQL Server 2000, client tools only.
i installed SQL Server Express (and associated .NET
framework upgrade) to take a look.
I then uninstalled sql server express and went back to
version 1.1 of .NET framework.
My query analyzer works fine, however when i try to load
Enterprise Manager, it says:
Snap-in failed to initialize.
Name: Microsoft SQL Enterprise Manager
CLSID:{00100100-1816-11D0-8EF5-00AA0062C58F}
I have looked through the knowledge base articles and
have not found one specific to my situation.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled sql server 2000 (and
therefore, MDAC as well) and I am running into the same
issues.
Any help is appreciated.
Did you try regsvr32 c:\...\...\sqldmo.dll

Did you find the actual sqldmo.dll file that corresponds to the SQL Server
2000 install? Or did you run exactly what I posted? Did you get a dialog
that told you the registration was successful?

Enterprise Mgr Snap-In Issue

I have been running SQL Server 2000, client tools only.
i installed SQL Server Express (and associated .NET
framework upgrade) to take a look.
I then uninstalled sql server express and went back to
version 1.1 of .NET framework.
My query analyzer works fine, however when i try to load
Enterprise Manager, it says:
Snap-in failed to initialize.
Name: Microsoft SQL Enterprise Manager
CLSID:{00100100-1816-11D0-8EF5-00AA0062C58F}
I have looked through the knowledge base articles and
have not found one specific to my situation.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled sql server 2000 (and
therefore, MDAC as well) and I am running into the same
issues.
Any help is appreciated.Did you try regsvr32 c:\...\...\sqldmo.dll

Enterprise Mgr quits after SQL2005 registering

I have both SQL2000 (default) and SQL2005 (second instance) on my laptop. Just to see if it could be done, I registered my (Local) SQL2000 default instance in the Registered Servers part of SQL2005 Mgmt Studio. It worked fine. I can see all the SQL2000 databases, etc in the Mgmt Studio.

But now the SQL2000 default instance will not connect in Enterprise Mgr nor can any of the programs that used to connect to the SQL2000 databases now connect to them. The (local) instance shows in Ent Mgr with the green arrow like it is there but Ent Mgr cannot connect when icon is clicked.

Is there anything I can do to bring the default SQL2000 instance back to be able to connect with anything other than the SQL2005 Mgmt Studio?

Do you get an error ? Which one ?

HTH, Jens K. Suessmeyer.

http://www.sqlserver2005.de
|||

The local node shows in the tree with a white circle with a green arrowhead inside the circle. Which indicates to me that the SQL instance is running and the Ent Mgr sees it. But when I click on the plus beside the node, I get the error:

A connection could not be established to (LOCAL)

Reason: SQL Server does not exist or access denied
ConnectionOpen(Connect())....

Please verify SQL Server is running and check your SQLServer registration properties (by right-clicking on the (LOCAL) node) and try again.

But I can go to the SQL2005 Mgmt Studio and click on (LOCAL) and see all the stuff in it. In Mgmt Studio, the properties for (LOCAL) show version 8.x of SQLServer.

Enterprise Mgr Problem in 2000 (Please HELP!)

Typically when I bring up Enterprise Mgr, I get the options to look at the databases, tables, etc. Now, when I choose EM, it brings up the Microsoft Management Console without anything in it except 'Console', 'Window', and 'Help'. When I open a new window, I can see the databases etc. but the top of the window says 'SQL Server Enterprise Manager [2:Console Root\Microsoft SQL Servers]' and a few of the icons are grayed out like 'New Database', 'New Login', and 'New Job'. I haven't changed anything that I know of. Please Help!

thx

Kat

One of the easy ways to fix this is to re run the install of the cliet tools from the server instal disk.

fyi, the reinstallation worked. Also, working on an older pc without much space probably caused the problem.

thx,

Kat

Enterprise Mgr Not showing Table permissions Correctly

After moving DB's to a new server, the public role was
removed on some, but not all of the tables. We tried
setting the permissions to public in EM but although it
correctly sets it, it does not appear to be set. So now
by using EM I can't tell which tables have the correct
permissions. Has anybody seen this problem where EM does
not correctly show the permissions? Does anyone know how
to resolve this? Also, can anyone show me a way to set
public permissions on all tables through QA?
ThanksYes, I've seen it before. It seems to be some disconnect between
syspermissions and sysprotects. I thought that a way to resolve it might be
to create a new database and copy the user tables into it and grant
permissions in the new database. However, I never got around to doing this.
Public is a role, what permissions would you want to grant to public? Select
to all tables?
GRANT SELECT
ON authors -- you could use a cursor here
TO public
Or, if you have your users already in a group, you could just add that group
to the db_datareader role (if you want everyone to have select).

Enterprise Mgr Error

Good Day
SQL 2000 - just started recieving the following when loading Enterprise
Manager directly on the server console (from a workstation is fine)
'Connection to application failed. Ensure that no program modules have
been deleted'
I tried re-installing both OS & SQL service packs to see if a DLL or
something was missing - but am still receiving the error - any ideas ?
Thanks!
Hi
Can you open MMC and other add-ins without getting this error?
Can you open SQL Server Enterprise Manager.msc from within MMC?

I vaguely recall having seen incorrect date formatting in Enterprise
Manager before, although I think that was the Jobs listing. Looking
now, I cannot see anything funny. Maybe there was a bug that was fixed
in a service pack? I'm running SP3, and you? Then again, regional
settings may also matter.

Enterprise Mgr as an end-user data manipulation tool

As DBAs we typically restrict the use of Enterprise Manager and other DBA
Admin type utilities from end-users. Even with a user's SQL server
permissions being appropriately defined and restricted, to limit their
abilities within Enterprise Manager, I typically do not allow end users to
use Enterprise Manager, for the same reason that an Exchange administrator
doesn't allow end-users to run Exchange Administrator to manage their
mailbox. It's an administration utility and is not intended as a data
manipulation interface.
I am faced with a unique situation where a 'power user' insists on wanting
to use SQL Enterprise Manager to access a particular database to which he has
read/write permissions to the production data, as he wants to browse and
modify data ad-hoc within the Enterprise Manager GUI (by right-clicking on a
table and selecting the 'Open, Return All Rows', etc. Due to political
reasons beyond my control, it appears that I will be 'told' to let him use
Enterprise Manager by upper management, so that the user can manage the data
via SQL EM.
Outside of the technical reasons why an end-user should not be using SQL
Enterprise Manager as the GUI to manage data within a database, even with
proper security, does anyone know of official audit guidelines that would
raise a 'red flag' if an audit determined that an end-user(s) were managing
data via SQL Enterprise Manager?
Thanks
D
Apart from read/write to certain tables in the DB, what other rights does
this user have within the server and database? The fact that an end-user
can (knowingly or not), if their rights aren't severely restricted, drop a
table, access and modify security/login info, modify/overwrite/delete
backups, add/remove indexes, etc. would make me wary.
Maybe you can suggest to them that this guy use Access as the front end, and
Link the tables he needs into Access so he can edit to his heart's content
without getting anywhere near EM?

Enterprise Mgr - Register server with multiple logins?

How can I register the same SQL Server more than once in
Enterprise Manager, using multiple logins?
"A server with this name already exists."
I'd expect this to be a FAQ, but twenty minutes of
googling it has turned up precious little by way of
remedies. This should be a pretty garden-variety
situation: I need to access multiple databases on a single
SQL Server, some of which require a different login from
others. I've added a new server group for the additional
instance/connection/registration, but every attempt to
register the server returns "A server with this name
already exists."
This is a simple thing to accomplish in Query Analyzer,
but I need some of Enterprise Manager's functionality.
Obviously, I could keep deleting and re-registering every
time I need to change context, but that's a pretty tedious
kludge, or I wouldn't be writing this post, you know?
Anyways, is there a hack?
Thanks much.
Create an alias to the SQL Server within the Client Network Utility (within
the SQL Server program group) and then register that alias within Enterprise
Manager.

quick and straightforward solution (...which is probably why I didn't arrive
at it on my own! heh.)
Thanks.

Enterprise Mgr - alter table fails

My developers just started having this problem a few weeks ago. Nearly
any type of "design" table changes are failing in Enterprise Mgr. This
only seems to be happening on the servers running Enterprise Edition.
Standard Edition and MSDE do not have the problem.
All are running SQL2000 - SP4. Some servers are Win2000 Server SP4 and
others are Win2003 Server - SP4. The Windows version does not seem to
matter. I am not aware of any maintenace applied to the SQL servers,
but all workstations have recently had automatic updates turned on and
have received some updates.
Here is the most common example. The developer needs to change the
length of a field in a table. They use Enterprise Mgr, right click on
the table and select "design". They make their change and when they
hit save, they get the following error. (There is no data in the
table.)
'prob1' table
- Unable to create index 'PK_prob1'.
ODBC error: MicrosoftODBC SQL Server DriverSQL ServerTable 'prob1'
already has a primary key defined on it.
MicrosoftODBC SQL Server DriverSQL ServerCould not create constraint.
See previous errors.
I can not just tell them to switch over and use Query Analyzer. Some
of these people have little or no SQL knowledge and would never make it
through alter table statements. They build tables for their front page
apps and that's as far as they get into SQL.
Any thoughts would be helpful. I've scoured support and newsgroups and
can only find old 6.5 and 7.0 reports. I've included the DDL to create
the table if needed. I get the error just changing F2 from 20 to 25
for example.
if exists (select * from dbo.sysobjects where id =
object_id(N'dbo.prob1') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsUserTable') = 1)
drop table dbo.prob1
GO
CREATE TABLE dbo.prob1 (
f1 char (10) NOT NULL ,
f2 char (20) NULL ,
f3 char (30) NULL
) ON PRIMARY
GO
ALTER TABLE dbo.prob1 ADD
CONSTRAINT PK_prob1 PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
(
f1
) ON PRIMARY
GO
Hi,
Just a small thought..
As you have applied SP4 to your SQL Servers, have you applied SP4 to all of
the development machines where the client tools (EM, QA) are installed, too?

|||Yes, all servers have SP4. As for client tools, I would say the
majority are. There may be a couple older machines that are not
current, but have not heard from any of those people - if there are any.

To be very blunt, if they can't write change scripts with ALTER TABLE,
they should not be changing tables at all. Performing changes to tables
is an advanced operation, and requires careful understanding, particularly
if you are to do it in a production environment.
The Design Table function in EM has several serious flaws (and all these
flaws are carried over to SQL 2005). I include a list below, from a post
that I made just the other day.
I was not able to reproduce the problem with the table you posted. But
you could get an idea of what's going by requesting getting a change
script from EM. (Which you should do anyway, because of all the bugs
in the Table Designer.) You find this function on the 3rd button from
the left in the toolbar.
Here is a list of know defenciencies with the Table Designer:
1) The transaction scope is wacko. What should be one transaction is
split up into several, which can lead to a table change being only
partly implemented, and your database becomes a mess. Or you just lose
constraints, without knowing it.
2) In the generated script, the transaction spans multiple batches. This
means that if one batch fails with a batch-aborting error, the
transaction is rolled back. The remaining batches in the script are
still carried out which is not likely what you want. (This flaw does
not appear if you save directly, as the Table Designer does not continue
to submit batches if there is an error.)
3) The table designer essentially behaves as there has been no later
version of SQL Server. That is, in many cases where it could use
ALTER TABLE, it instead runs a script where it creates a new table
and copies data over.
4) Say that you have to tables A and B. B has an FK to A. You first make a
change to B, and generate a script. Then you change your mind, and
close without saving anything. Instead you make a change A. When you
generate script (or even worse just press Save), you find that the
change to B is included.
5) All constraints that are reapplied, are reapplied WITH NOCHECK,
which means that they are not trusted as far as the optimizer is
concerned. This have serious impact on performance, not the least
with partitioned views.

That you know of. Some of the problems that I pointed out are of the
kind that you may not notice directly when they cause problems. If you
lose an FK constraint, you may not notice until years later when you find
some junk in the column.

|||I thought I would let you know that I found the problem. The
XACT_ABORT option had been turned on server-wide. The new tools with
SQL 2005 allow you to turn that option off/on in the server properties
and someone had turned it on. Once I turned it back off, Enterprise
Manager worked like a champ again. Guess this is why we have
development servers - to learn lessons the hard way.
Thanks all!

Enterprise Mgr

I have recently installed MSDE on my computer. Now I need to get a copy of
Enterprise Mgr or equivalent. Does anyone know if I can obtain this from
somewhere without having to purchase anything from M$http://www.aspfaq.com/show.asp?id=2442
