Enterprise Manager/Query Analyser hangs
clients (they run SQL srv 2000 with SP4 on Windows Server 2000 with SP3) -
when they click the + on Databases on Enterprise manager, it hangs and also
hangs the server (applications accessing the DB timeout). We found that user
sa did not have access to any DBs! -- which we restored with sp_changedbowner
- but still hangs! Query analyser also hangs when opening object browser. All
other actions also very slow. Have also checked and switched off autoclose on
all DBs.
Could not yet determine how and exactly when this happened.
Any advice appreciated.

Enterprise Manager Hangs....
1. SQL Server 2K with Service Pack 3.x.
Steps to generate error in Enterprise Manager.
Right click on Database node, select All Tasks and Restore Database... Hourglass appears for ever.
All Tasks--> Backup Database... and All Tasks--> Attach Database... works fine.
Installed the SP4 and reinstalled the Enterprise Manager component. No help. Still the same hourglass at this stage.
2. When the above steps are repeated from other PC(Enterprise Manager), the hour glass appears. Irrespective from which EM (different PC) I run the above steps the EM hangs.
What would be the cause and remedy.
Thank you for your thoughts.
Smith
Here is the update on this issue...
Restore database window appears after long wait.... more than an hour.........
It never use to be so earlier.
What got changed recently?
SQL Server was writing the backup files(full backup, differential backup and transactional backup on UNC path) to Windows 2K Server and lately started writing to Windows Server 2003.
When the restore is selected it will list all the backup set files and its path. Is the EM taking longtime to read this list? Does the new file system is delaying the read?
Any thoughts?
Thank you,
|||
Run a trace and see what commands, statements are being executed when it hangs. That should give you more to figure out the issue.

Enterprise Manager Hangs trying to show TEMPDB properties
Hi there -
I am trying to look at TEMPDB properties in Enterprise Manager but it just hangs forever. I can look at props for all other databases on that server OK. The server is working OK but users reporting performance problems.
Also, how to increase the size of TEMPDB in T-SQL - I can see it is approx 200MB plus 300MB for the transaction log at the moment.
(Microsoft Windows 2003 Std Edition SP1, SQL Server 2000 Std Edition SP3)
Thanks for helping,
Michael
Hi Michael,
Are you trying to use Enterprise Manager on the database server, it is probably a busy box.
You can increase the size of the tempdb by using the the alter database comand.
Code Snippet
ALTER DATABASE TEMPDB MODIFY FILE (NAME=TEMPDEV, SIZE =1000MB)
GO
ALTER DATABASE TEMPDB MODIFY FILE (NAME=TEMPLOG, SIZE =1000MB)
GO

Enterprise Manager Hangs
from Novell and all our servers were moved from our little domain. We
are seeing a wierd problem with SQLSever since our move. The sever that
has SQL Server is working fine and we are able to register the server in
Enterprise Manager. However, it sits and hangs when trying to browse
the Databases or Management nodes (all other nodes are ok). We can also
get to Query Analyzer and queries against any of the the database tables
work just fine .. UNLESS Query Analyzer tries to browse for the
databases (to populate that database dropdown or display the Object
browser) .. in that case, it sits and hangs.
We have installed Service Pack 4 and this did not resolve the issue.
The hotfix for RAM over 2 gig on the server does not apply in our case.
Has anyone experienced this problem before? We rebooted SQL Server
yesterday and after a couple of reboots, it worked (the Query Analyzer
issue remained), but we are now back to the same issue.
Any clues, suggestions, and of course fixes would be much appreciated!
Thank you!

|||May be what Erdal is saying, is what is hurting the sp. Try executing the
only statement inside the sp [sp_mshasdbaccess] and you will get same
problem, but if you comment the line:
--owner = substring(suser_sname(sid), 1, 24),
then everything will be normal.
Try reporting this to Microsoft.

sp_MsHasDbAccess does not return any result at all .. it simply hangs.
So when I ran profiler while trying to execute it, it shows a bunch of
stuff under my login name and then sits on sp_MsHasDbAccess. (btw, some
of the statements before that was select IS_SRVROLEMEMBER ('sysadmin'),
which returns a 1; SELECT ISNULL(SUSER_SNAME(), SUSER_NAME()) correctly
returns my login name).
Thanks!

Enterprise Manager hangs
I have a production server which has about six user databases. Recently,
when I try to do a restore ( I wanted to see the available backup sets) on
any of the databases using Enterprise Manager (All Tasks -> Restore) it
hangs. However, it promptly brings a pop up window when I do the All Tasks ->
Backup. What might be causing it to behave this way?
Thanks in advance.
Hi
Perhaps you need to delete a backup history

|||We are seeing this too. The only change we have done recently is applying
SLQ Server Cum 6 for SP2. Management Studio hangs when we attempt to restore
from a device. Specifically, it hangs when we click "Add" on the Specify
Backup dialog. We have no problems using the "From Database" option, so I do
not believe it has anything to do with MSDB indexes.

Enterprise manger hangs when we try loading it? anyone have any ideas?

Hi,
2 reasons may be the cause:-
1. See if Autoclose option is enabled for the database. If it is enabled
then disable the database option. This option will close the database once
the last user logs off. So while connecting back it open the database back
again and take some time
2. This can be slow if you have more backup history. So delete the history
using:-
sp_delete_database_backuphistoXry (see books online)
Thanks

There was a problem like this with the early version of SQL Server 2000.
What service pack are you on? Have a look at this article, it may be your
problem.

Hope this helps

Enterprise Manager Hangs
I'm using a Windows 2003 server with SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 3a.
When I go to enterprise manager and click on (local) under server groups,
enterprise manager hangs and once that happens, all connections (query
analyzer or web SQL connect) fails. I have to end the tasks: mmc.exe and
sqlsvr.exe and then start the server again using the Service Manager. (If I
try to stop the server after ending mmc.exe, the status of the Server just
stays as "Stopping").
If I don't go to Enterprise Manager, everything works fine. Also, just in
case you're wondering, I DO NOT have tracing enabled.
I used ProcExp from www.sysinternals.com and after clicking on (local)
with enterprise manager, I get the following data:
2 new events:
\BaseNamedObjects\Crypt32LogOff
\$SERVER$MSSQLSERVER(2427)_C_READPOSTED
when i look at the threads, i get the following:
RPCRT4.DLLNdrRangeUnmarshall
msvcrt.dll!end thread
Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
(a) stop usng Enterprise Manager :-)
(b) see if a post-SP3 hotfix cures it. See http://www.aspfaq.com/2160 for a
list...

|||Thanks for the link and the advice... =)
Anyway, I have a few more details about the problem:
When I click on the (local) in the server groups in enterprise manager, I
hear a beep and the status bar msg is "Establishing connection to SQL Server
and Checking Windows Security".
Also, I reinstalled SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a but it didn't help.

the Databases or Management nodes (all other nodes are ok). We can also
get to Query Analyzer and queries against any of the the database tables
work just fine ..
Thank you!

only statement inside the sp [sp_mshasdbaccess] and you will get same
problem, but if you comment the line:
-- owner = substring(suser_sname(sid), 1, 24),
then everything will be normal.
Try reporting this to Microsoft.

sp_MsHasDbAccess does not return any result at all .. it simply hangs.
So when I ran profiler while trying to execute it, it shows a bunch of
stuff under my login name and then sits on sp_MsHasDbAccess. (btw, some
of the statements before that was select IS_SRVROLEMEMBER ('sysadmin'),
which returns a 1; SELECT ISNULL(SUSER_SNAME(), SUSER_NAME()) correctly
returns my login name).

Enterprise manger hangs when we try loading it? anyone have any ideas?

GiacomoHi,
2 reasons may be the cause:-
1. See if Autoclose option is enabled for the database. If it is enabled
then disable the database option. This option will close the database once
the last user logs off. So while connecting back it open the database back
again and take some time
2. This can be slow if you have more backup history. So delete the history
using:-
sp_delete_database_backuphisto_ry (see books online)

Enterprise Manager hangs
I have a production server which has about six user databases. Recently,
when I try to do a restore ( I wanted to see the available backup sets) on
any of the databases using Enterprise Manager (All Tasks -> Restore) it
hangs. However, it promptly brings a pop up window when I do the All Tasks ->
Backup. What might be causing it to behave this way?
Thanks in advance.Hi

SLQ Server Cum 6 for SP2. Management Studio hangs when we attempt to restore
from a device. Specifically, it hangs when we click "Add" on the Specify
Backup dialog. We have no problems using the "From Database" option, so I do
not believe it has anything to do with MSDB indexes.

master.dbo.xp_availablemedia", which is what is hanging. I ran "exec
master.dbo.xp_availablemedia" stand alone, and it hangs. This is calling DLL
xpStar90.dll. Has anyone ever seen what might cause this?

everything is fine. As soon as we restarted the node where things were
hanging, we started getting alerts on that the C drive is going bad. I think
this is why it was having trouble calling the dll. You may have a similar
issue. Are you using any monitoring tools like Sitescope to monitor the
hardware? You may have a drive that is going bad.

I can stop and start the server.
I have tried reinstalling. I have checked that the
services are running correctly.Hi, please verify permissions on folder Microsoft SQL Server.

Thank you!
Artie

only statement inside the sp [sp_mshasdbaccess] and you will get same
problem, but if you comment the line:
-- owner = substring(suser_sname(sid), 1, 24),
then everything will be normal.
Try reporting this to Microsoft.

Enterprise Manager and Query Analyser Hang-up
insert a row to the table, the Query Analyser hangs up. If I want to drop an
index from that table using the Enterprise Manager, it hangs up too. All the
other tables work fine. How can I solve it? Thanks.
Joe
Drop/Create INDEX requres page lock and hence nobody is available to use the
table till transaction will be commited. In fact Iwould do that by EM
because it has lots of lacks.
When you insert a row into the table check out that the table does not have
a trigger which may hangs up the application.
