Enterprise manager licencing

1. If someone is using SQL2000 MSDE, can he install enterprise manager to
manage it without SQL server licence?
2. If someone has a SQL2000 standard licence, can he install enterprise
manager (or any other CLIENT tools) to other client machines too?
3. SQL2005 express now has a GUI tool called Microsoft SQL Server Management
Studio Express that is free for download from Microsoft. Can it be used to
manage 2000 MSDE too?
Thanks
Tom
Hi Tom,
1. Yes. EM is a client tool which does not need to be licensed, because SQL
Server is licensed.
2. Yes. See above.
3. I'm not sure, but I think it is possible.

|||Sorry Danijel & Tom, but:
1. No, you can't use SQL EM to manage the MSDE without a "real" SQL Server
license being involved. EM is licensed via a client access license from a
"real" SQL Server license.
2. Yes, if those systems have SQL Server CALs themselves.
3. Yes

That's not so. Client tools must ALWAYS be licensed. Tom either needs
to purchase a Server Processor licence or purchase a client licence for
each Enterprise Manager installation or user.
As to the other questions, if in doubt consult a Microsoft
representative but my understanding is that you cannot use Enterprise
Manager to manage MSDE installations.

Whenever possible please post enough code to reproduce your problem.
Including CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements usually helps.
State what version of SQL Server you are using and specify the content
of any error messages.

|||Hi Greg,
1. Is then any possibility to buy just EM license as buying SQL Server
license and CALs is to expensive for using just MSDE.
Thanks,

|||Hi Danijel,
No, that's why myself and others have built tools to do this. Mine were at
www.whitebearconsulting.com. There is a free personal use license for MSDE
Manager there.
Tons of others can be found online, both free and paid. It will be less of
an issue now with SQL Server Express edition which I'd suggest you look
into.
