Enumerate all available sql servers

Is there a possibility to enumerate all available sql servers in pure java.
At this time i execute osl -L and interprete the result.
Process p = runTime.exec("osql -L");
Computers without a msde or sql server installed do not have the osql
program. Is there a way to install osql? Or is there an other way to find all
available sql servers?

You could simply try to connect to port 1433 of all machines and/or use
a JDBC driver that supports named pipes and try to connect via named
pipe to each machine in the network. This might take quite a while,
though.

I already tried to connect to all machines, but i took a while (some minutes
which is too long).
I also tried to open a socket on port 1433, but sql server does not respond.
Is there a possibility to multicast a udp message to all ms-sql-monitors
(port 1434)?
Pipes is maybe an alternitive, but i'm not sure if pipes are enabled.

Rolling your own sqlbrowse with UDP on port 1434 should work, but if
you're considering going through OSQL then you'd be better off using
ODBC (SQLBrowseConnect) which is on every Windows box.
Be careful that this broadcast method is pretty imprecise -- Windows
machines after XPSP2 (esp. W2K3+) turn off port 1434 by default, and the
SQL Server 2005 will also ship with this port off by default for most
scenarios.

|||It’s quite difficult to find out the structure of the udp messages send by
the sql monitor. If anyone knows the udp structure all information is
welcome. I can try to write the udp messages with some help.

I tried the SQLBrowseConnect method as well. I couldn't call it directly
from java, but I found a C++ program.

out the multicast address?
Right now i'm testing with a fixed 10.0.0.255 multicast address. Probably
this address want be te same for every company, but how can i calculate this

|||Ok, i created some classes to look up all sql servers reachable by a
computer. The program performs a lookup of all subnets of a computer and send
the 02 multicast message on each subnet.
Where should i put the classes? Here as plain text on the forum?
To lookup the subnet of an ip, I use IPCONFIG. Ipconfig is translated, so I
included english, french and dutch. If you need more languages you should add
the texts. I'll add some comment to the source code.

Enterprise Manager hangs

Hi,
I have a production server which has about six user databases. Recently,
when I try to do a restore ( I wanted to see the available backup sets) on
any of the databases using Enterprise Manager (All Tasks -> Restore) it
hangs. However, it promptly brings a pop up window when I do the All Tasks ->
Backup. What might be causing it to behave this way?

|||We are seeing this too. The only change we have done recently is applying
SLQ Server Cum 6 for SP2. Management Studio hangs when we attempt to restore
from a device. Specifically, it hangs when we click "Add" on the Specify
Backup dialog. We have no problems using the "From Database" option, so I do
not believe it has anything to do with MSDB indexes.

master.dbo.xp_availablemedia", which is what is hanging. I ran "exec
master.dbo.xp_availablemedia" stand alone, and it hangs. This is calling DLL
xpStar90.dll. Has anyone ever seen what might cause this?

|||Our SQL Instance is clustered, so we failed over to the other node and
everything is fine. As soon as we restarted the node where things were
hanging, we started getting alerts on that the C drive is going bad. I think
this is why it was having trouble calling the dll. You may have a similar
issue. Are you using any monitoring tools like Sitescope to monitor the
hardware? You may have a drive that is going bad.

enterprise manager error

Hi,
When trying to modify or add a table using enterprise manager I got this
message error:
Enterprise manager: not enough storage is available to complete this
operation.
I have a lot off space available.
I don't have a memory leake.
My server is Dell PowerEdge 2850 with tho CPU ( 3.6 GHZ)
I Regestred my SQL server 2000 on another enterprise manager in a second
server and I was able to modify the table.
I was able to create a table by using query analyser.
Could someone help me find the bug?
Using EM to modify live tables is never a good idea. It often will create a
new table, copy all the rows over to the new table and then drop the old
one. So it must have at least as much space available in the db as the
table being modified and its indexes. But that does not explain why EM
worked on the other machine.

I beleive that using Enterprise manager is not the best choice. but my
issue occurs even when I try to modify a small database as northwind or pubs.

reinstalling the client tools but I bet it is an issue with that machine
more than EM.

If you purchase a CAL using a client licensing model, that gives you the
rights to install the client tools. If you already have a processor
license, your users can install client tools. The client tools are
installed from the main SQL Server CD. There are no separate downloads
AFAIK. None of this applies if you don't own a SQL Server license. There
are some free and more capable retail tools out there to perform the
functions of SQL EM / QA.

On the remote machine SQL Server 2000 (MSDE Edition) installed
3 Instances;

Both machines are on the same domain. All SQL server instances are
running.
I have also used the svrnetcn.exe tool to make sure the Named Pipes
and TCP/IP protocols are enabled. The port on the TCP/IP protocol has
been changed to 1433 on all remote instances. (both machines were
rebooted)
What else can I check ?

registering...

Add Aliases for your named instances and try connecting then.

No, Enterprise Manager is not free, it's part of the 'big' SQL-Server,
where you have to pay for. You can manage MSDE with EM, yes, but you are
not allowed to copy EM from somebody or to give it away for free. You can
buy a SQL-Server Developer Edition CD from Microsoft (around 60$), this
includes an EM you can use for development.
Or you can use this free tool (can handle SQL2005 too!):

Enter Today's Date in SSMS Open Table Grid View

What date constants are available for entering today's date in a
datetime column after using the Open Table command within SSMS? I
have tried GETDATE() and CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, but neither worked.
Another question - if I open the samed named table in two databases to
compare the data contents using Open Table, the tab labels only
display the table name and are not fully qualified. Is there an SSMS
option to show the table labels fully qualified.

You look at your watch, and the type what you see. Open Table is a very
simple data-entry tool.
If you don't want to consult your watch, you will have to write an INSERT
or an UPDATE statement instead.
