Enumerating Role Permissions with SMO

Hi,

I am attempting to enumerate role permissions using SMO. I can enumerate the permissions on a atbel, view, or store procedure no problem. When I try to enumerate the permissions that a role has I get the following error:

'Operation not supported on SQL Server 2000'

Can anyone help me in sorting this out. I had the permissions enumerated in DMO but I just can't seem to get it to work in SMO.

Thanks,

James

Just to make sure that I answer this correctly: are you connecting to SQL Server 2000 or SQL Servert 2005?|||

Hi,

I am connecting to SQL2K. I have not problem getting the permissions on a table, view, stored procedure, or function. Its only when I try to get the permissions for a role or user.

James

|||

SMO has aligned the meaning of User.EnumObjectPermissions with all other objects (such as Table). This means that you would enumerate the permissions that have granted or denied to a principal for a User object; not the permissions that have been granted to the User object (which represents a database user). SQL Server 2005 has implemented this (it was not possible for SQL Server 2000) so that clarifies the message you get.

You should be able to call Database.EnumObjectPermissions(User.Name) to obtain the results that you expect.

|||

Thanks,

that worked a treat.

James

|||

Hi,

I am also working on the table permissions.

ObjectPermissionInfo[] objPer = database.EnumObjectPermissions(database.UserName);

But, from this point how could I display all permissions for a table? Could you please send me a sample code?

Thanks in advance.

Entreprise Manager behaviour

Dear all,
I've got the following scenario:
-Got two EM instances running at the same time. The same view on the right
for both, this is, Tables.
From EM1 I create a table called T. After that I'm going to EM2 and refresh.
Fine because I am seeing the same object.
-Come back to EM1 and drop T object and create again another T object but
different, with more fields. When this time I'm going to EM2 and I do drop
action I've dropped the most new object not the old one when I was waiting a
messagebox or something like that warning me that I am deleting an object
which is different than I though.
Jezz, how can I do for to change this behaviour?
Any help or comment woud be very appreciated.
Current location: Alicante (ES)The behaviour you describe is exactly os should be expected.
When you drop a table in EM, EM actually executes a T-SQL drop table
statement.

Well, I should have said, learn to use them. I would much rather write DROP
TABLE and/or wrap my commands in transactions than blindly trust what some
GUI is going to do. Especially when I'm doing some backhanded thing like
just trying to see what will happen when I bounce quickly between two open

entity relationship diagram

I have VS 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express installed and I created 4 tables and setup the primary and foreign keys and can view the individual foreign key relationships by right clicking on the foreign key.

Is there a way to view a table relationship diagram (fields with primary and foreign keys), such as Access provides. Does VS 2005 or SQL Server 2005 have that capability?

Thanks

If you right-click on the folder named Database Diagrams, you can create a databse diagram. You can create a diagram here. To view the folder, click the plus sign next to the database that you want to create the diagram for.

Entities Disappear in Ad Hoc Reports

I have a single data source view which contains 3 tables. Each table is a
completely denormalized (like a spreadsheet) dataset from a particular
business system. The tables themselves don't contain any foreign key
relationships, but within the data source view editor I created primary keys
on each table and created relationships between each table. However, when I
try to create a report in report builder, as soon as add an entity from one
table to my report, the other 2 tables disappear. I have found a few other
posts about this problem and the resolutions offered were (1) add a "refer",
but I don't know what that is; and (2) create or add relationships, but I
believe I have done that. What do I have to do to prevent the tables from
disappearing? Thanks.
Also, is there a good resource for reading up on Ad-Hoc reporting? The
books I have seen only cover it briefly.I figured this out. I need to add a role to each table in the Report Model
Designer. It is all in Books Online.

Enterprise Manager vs. INSTEAD OF triggers?

Hello all, i seem to have run into something weird...
I have a view which joins several tables (one main, and several relational
lookups). The view is simple-updateable, but i overrode this with an INSTEAD
OF UPDATE trigger to prevent people from changing the key fields, or the
lookup values. This works fine from Query Analyzer, or Access. If i try to
update one of the other fields, it simply doesnt take but the fields which
do get handled by the trigger do... all works fine.
However, if i open the view in Ent. Mgr. and type in changes to one of the
"non-updatable" fields, it actually updates it. It appears to be that when
making changes to data through the Enterprise Manager data views, it
bypasses any triggers (or at least INSTEAD OF triggers).
Is this actually the case? It seems kind of screwey, but that would seem to
be borne out by my little experiments here.
Cheers,
- Arthur.
When you open a view and update the data from EM, the UPDATE statemenet is
issued directly to the table, not to the view. That's why the trigger is
bypassed.

I'm not seeing that behavior here. I created an instead of update
trigger on a table and SQL EM spits out an error when the trigger is
violated. Here's the code. What do you see when you change a date to
value greater than today?
create table test (col1 int identity not null, col2 datetime not null)
go
insert into test values (getdate())
insert into test values (getdate() - 1)
insert into test values (getdate() - 2)
go
create trigger test_ioi on test
instead of update
as
begin
If Not Exists (Select * from inserted where col2 > getdate())
Update test
Set col2 = i.col2
From test, inserted i
Where test.col1 = i.col1
Else
RAISERROR ('Date provided is greater than today'' date. Update
failed.', 16, 1)
end
go

|||My trigger is on a VIEW, not on a table. Jack answered above though, and
apparently explained why i get this behaviour.
In EM, when you open a view, its not actually opening the view, but the
underlying tables, only using the view definition. So triggers on the view
DO get bypassed.
|||Just an FYI, there is not such thing as "opening" a table or a view. EM does SELECT against the view
but issue the UPDATE/INSERT/DELETE against the table. Check out the WITH VIEW_METADATA option when
you create the view to handle this.

Enterprise Manager problem with views

We have a user who is a db_owner on a database that he can't create a view using Enterprise Manager. When he tries to create a view it returns: "ODBC error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Line 1: Incorrect syntax near '240'." His NT Domain username is 240DBH.

We've tried it on my computer with him logging on and get the same result. He can create views just fine using query analyzer. Does anybody know what's wrong with doing this in Enterprise Manager? By the way, I can create views in the db using Enterprise Manager just fine.

Thanks for your help!Turn Profiler on and see what commands Enterprise is sending to the server to create this view. It may shed some light.|||Thanks for the suggestion! I hadn't used the profiler before. It is trying to execute the following:

CREATE VIEW 240dbh.VIEW1
AS
SELECT ID, [Start Date]
FROM T_DATA

Now, when I run this in query analyzer, I get the same error. It seems like that should work to me.|||Now I think I have it narrowed down. His username starts with numbers. If you can't have a username that starts with numbers, that is pretty lame.

Does anyone know if there is a better front-end than enterprise manager for creating tables/views/stored procedures?

Thanks!|||User names with numbers are not a problem. Does the user have ddladmin rights?

If you are using SS2K than use the Query Analyzer! Much better for users than the EM!|||I set up a user under sql server 7 with a username that has no numbers with the exact same permissions as that user who can't create a view.

That new user with no numbers can create views just fine.

So, the only difference between the two users is that one is a sql server logon and one uses NT domain authentication, and the fact that one has numbers in the username.

What I'm finding is that if enterprise manager would do something like:
CREATE VIEW [240dbh].VIEW1

instead of:
CREATE VIEW 240dbh.VIEW1

it would work.

Enterprise manager crashing SQL Server

Hi

We're having trouble with Enterprise manager when trying to view views or table data/properties, we get an access violation error and the database crashes sometimes corrupting tables.
Ive seen some posts stating a post SP3 for SQL Server is required and some posts saying client access should be modfied.
However our enterprise manager clients are registered with SA so I dont think that is an issue.
Can anyone give me some help with this and/or direct me to the hotfix please.

Cheers

LouiseThis is the problem due to mismatched DLLs and corrupted client tools installed. Ensure to install SQL client tools from scratch.

And its better to review the task using query analyzer rather than opening from Enterprise Manager due to flaky behaviour of such GUI tools.|||thanks will give that a go and reinstall my client tools

Cheers

Enterprise Manager and Query Analyser Hang-up

When I use the Query Analyser, I can view the data in one table. But if I
insert a row to the table, the Query Analyser hangs up. If I want to drop an
index from that table using the Enterprise Manager, it hangs up too. All the
other tables work fine. How can I solve it? Thanks.
Joe
Drop/Create INDEX requres page lock and hence nobody is available to use the
table till transaction will be commited. In fact Iwould do that by EM
because it has lots of lacks.
When you insert a row into the table check out that the table does not have
a trigger which may hangs up the application.

Enterprise Manager

Hi All,
When I view the database properties using Enterprise Manager, some of the databases on the server are reporting that there is zero space available while others have space available. Does anybody know why?in the database properties section go to the data files tab...over there in the location column check out what are the options available...if you say restrict file growth and if the database is full the space available will be zero.....also check whether there is any space available on the drive where the mdf file is created...might be the case that the drive is full...|||I've checked the options in the Database Properties and the option selected is unrestricted file growth. Also, the disk have enough space available on the drive where the mdf file is created. What else can it be?

Enterprise manager

hi,
I used backup and restore moved a database from one server to another.
Everything works fine. But I got problem view the taskpad of the database. I
could view it from another server but not this server.
right after restore I could view it but after close EM and reopen , I got
this error when trying to view the taskpad of the database:
Internet Explorer script error:
An error has occurred in the script on this page:
Line: 307
Char: 2
Error: unspecified error
Code: 0
URL:
res://c:\Program%20Files\Microsoft%20SQL%20server\80\Tools\Binn\Resources\10
33\sqlmmc.rll/Tabs.html
Could you please help!!
Thanks
Kathy ChenHi Kathy.
Hopefully someone will give you a more precise answer to the actual problem
you're experiencing, but my 20c worth on this is that you probably shouldn't
become too dependant on the MMC SnapIn TaskPads. If you search the archive
of this newsgroup you'll find a trail of destruction from others trying to
use the TaskPad views - they simply don't work very reliably. There's lots
more on this in microsoft.public.management.mmc as well.
Another thing that often fails with Task Views is in the "Table Info" tab -
this view often won't let you scroll to the next page - often the next page
nav tools are missing. It's a really nice feature, but it just doesn't work
reliably, imho. My work around to that problem was simply to use profiler to
grab what the EM was sending to the server, saved it as a script & you get
the same information.. (c:

There's a very simple workaround for the scripting error you'r
encountering in Enterprise Manager.
Just right-click on the DB, click view, then click list to display th
DB objects. Go back, right-click on the DB, click view, then clic
Taskpad. It will reset the web interface and it'll work again.
Yes, another stupid bug in MSSQL SQL Server.

Enter Today's Date in SSMS Open Table Grid View

What date constants are available for entering today's date in a
datetime column after using the Open Table command within SSMS? I
have tried GETDATE() and CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, but neither worked.
Another question - if I open the samed named table in two databases to
compare the data contents using Open Table, the tab labels only
display the table name and are not fully qualified. Is there an SSMS
option to show the table labels fully qualified.
Thanks in advance - Peter

You look at your watch, and the type what you see. Open Table is a very
simple data-entry tool.
If you don't want to consult your watch, you will have to write an INSERT
or an UPDATE statement instead.

Yes, it's called SP2. That is, they've changed this in SP2 so that the
database name is included.
