Enumerating instances without DMO

Can anyone suggest a method of enumerating instances of MSDE 2000 without
using DMO ?

Using C++, MFC, and ADO.

ThanksSee questions 12 and 13:

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...6&Product=sql2k

If you need to enumerate instances externally (ie without access to the
server's registry), then SQLDMO may still be the best option - see the
ListAvailableSQLServers method. Also see here:

http://www.sqldev.net/misc/ListSQLSvr.htm

Simon|||Simon,

Many thanks. I feel a bit foolish as I trawled through that document,
although it was a few years ago...

I have not got satisfactory results from 'ListAvailableSQLServers'. Function
returns OK but the resulting loop yields only 1 server, I have two
instances. Never mind, the registry is fine for my needs and a lot simpler.

Cheers

Jon.

enumerate the list of MSDE instances

Hi All,
I want to enumerate the list of MSDE instances on LAN using VB6.I
cannot use SQLDMO or SMO library.
I am using NetServerEnum API but it displays only SQL servers and
default MSDE instance.
Is there any API or other means to get the list of named instance of
MSDE in VB6.
Please advice.
Nidhi Sharma
Thanks for your response!
SuperSockets Network Protocols were enabled during installation of
MSDE2000.
I am able to connect successfully using <Computer Name>/
<InstanceName>. But the problem is that i am unable to get the list of
MSDE instances on the LAN.It displays the default instance if present.
Could you guide me how to broadcast UDP on port 1434 in VB6?

Enumerate SQL servers?

I'm working on an Access app that will have a SQL 2K backend. My setup will
install MSDE, and I will set the sa password, etc. which I don't want the
end user's to know. My problem is in Relinking the ODBC tables once it is
installed in the field. The one item I won't know is the name of the server
MSDE is installed on. I want to prompt the user to pick the server from a
list, much like you do when creating a DSN through the ODBC Administrator. I
can't use the ODBC Administrator to create a DSN because if the user doesn't
enter the sa password, it fails; also, I want to use DSN-less connections.
But I can't seem to find an API call to enumerate the SQL servers available
on the network. Does anyone know of an API to call? Alternatively, some code
to enumerate SQL servers running on the LAN? TIA!Can also look at :

|||Hi Vinodk,
I can list SQL server instances on my personal computer fairly easily using
SQLBrowseConnect and associated methods but I have trouble trying to
enumerate all SQL servers on the network if I am not connected to a browser
service. Obviously, I don't expect to get a list of servers if I am not
connected but I can't seem to get a *faster* way to check if I am connected
to the browser service.
I use something like the folowing to see if any master browsers are
available in hopes for speed bit it is very slow. If the status return

Check your SQL Server error logs for more information. Also
check the SQL Agent log and see if you find any errors
related to that issue. You may also want to check the stack

It must be a problem with some mismatched file version
Reinstall MDAC 2.8 from the following location and see if it helps
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...0fe3-c795-4b7d-
b037-185d0506396c&DisplayLang=en
If that fails, use the component checker from the following location to see
if there are any mismatched file versions. You can do that by running an
analysis against MDAC 2.8
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8df6-4a21-4b43-
bf53-14332ef092c9&DisplayLang=en
Try to replace the mismatched files with the right ones from another server
and then stop and restart SQL. Pay specific attention to OLEDB32.dll.

Enterprise Manager Licensing with MSDE

Hello.
I have an application I am developing with MSDE. I know that I am properly
licensed to use MSDE and distribute that with my application. However, I
cannot seem to find any information about Enterprise Manager licensing. We
have a valid license of Sql Server 2000 and I have been using Enterprise
Manager to configure my MSDE database. I need to install the application at
a client's site and I was wondering if the licensing would allow me to
install Enterprise Manager so that I can configure the database on site
without having to use OSQL. (e.g. attaching the database)
Thanks.

from Microsoft representative, http://tinyurl.com/eyukf, you are not
entitled to manage MSDE in production scenario with standard SQL Server
Client Tools... you have to rely on home made tools and/or 3rd party
tools...
you can find a partial list of them, both commercial and free, at
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/partners/default.asp and
http://www.aspfaq.com/show.asp?id=2442

|||There is a free tool called DbaMgr that might fill your need. This tool can
be obtained at the following URL:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/partners/default.asp
The description of the tool reads as follows:
DbaMgr for MSDE 1.0 and DbaMgr2k for MSDE 2000 provide a free graphical
management interface for MSDE installations. They allow to manage and
administer servers, databases and database objects from a Windows interface
similar to Microsoft Enterprise Manager. To traditionals SQL Server tasks as
objects management and permissions, data manipulation, SQL Agent management,
custom T-SQL statements execution window, extended properties management,
DbaMgr and DbaMgr2k provide a visual interface for BCP operations, export to
'INSERT INTO' DDL sql files, HTML database documentation as well, and are
fully localizable.
Appriopriate SQL Server Client Components and MDAC versions are required.
Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 source code is available.
There are other, similar, tools listed on the same page.

Enterprise manager licencing

1. If someone is using SQL2000 MSDE, can he install enterprise manager to
manage it without SQL server licence?
2. If someone has a SQL2000 standard licence, can he install enterprise
manager (or any other CLIENT tools) to other client machines too?
3. SQL2005 express now has a GUI tool called Microsoft SQL Server Management
Studio Express that is free for download from Microsoft. Can it be used to
manage 2000 MSDE too?
Thanks

Hi Tom,
1. Yes. EM is a client tool which does not need to be licensed, because SQL

2. Yes. See above.
3. I'm not sure, but I think it is possible.

Thanks
TomHi Tom,
1. Yes. EM is a client tool which does not need to be licensed, because SQL
Server is licensed.
2. Yes. See above.
3. I'm not sure, but I think it is possible.

1. No, you can't use SQL EM to manage the MSDE without a "real" SQL Server
license being involved. EM is licensed via a client access license from a
"real" SQL Server license.

That's not so. Client tools must ALWAYS be licensed. Tom either needs
to purchase a Server Processor licence or purchase a client licence for
each Enterprise Manager installation or user.
As to the other questions, if in doubt consult a Microsoft
representative but my understanding is that you cannot use Enterprise
Manager to manage MSDE installations.

Whenever possible please post enough code to reproduce your problem.
Including CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements usually helps.
State what version of SQL Server you are using and specify the content

Enterprise Manager for MSDE

Howdy All,
How do I open Enterprise Manager for MSDE SP3?
I have installed MSDE as part of ACT! installation and have found references
to Enterprise Manager, but don't know how to get into it.
Thanks,
Brian
Enterprise Manager doesnt ship with MSDE, thats one of the limitations in
there. There are other free tools out there to use with the MSDE for
administering. For Queries there is QALite, which I think is a really good
one.

Microsoft is giving a free tool named "SQL Server Web data Administrator" to
manager and administrator the SQl server. This will be more useful to
MSDE users. Download the free tool from below site.

Enterprise Manager and named instances

Hi, How to connect via internet to MSDE 2000 named instance using Enterprise
Manager?
On remote server (2K Server) there are installed MSDE 2000 default instance
and named instance. Named instance is using port 3077.
Adam,
in the Client Network utility define an alias which points to your
named instance and define the port number.

This can be a very tricky licensing issue, and I strongly recommend speaking
to your licensing rep (or where you obtained the standard license(s)) to
determine if your current agreement allows you to manage MSDE. MS' response
to this issue has varied from "whatever" to "you cannot do that."
In the meantime, you can try and see if any of these other tools will allow
you to schedule backups/jobs (most, if not all, will allow you to look at
schema):

the sixth question in the Appropriate Uses of MSDE FAQ at
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/howtobuy/msdeuse.asp, copied below for
your benefit. The big catch here is the "in conjunction with a properly
licensed copy of SQL Server 2000", the definition of which is left up to
your lawyer because from what I've heard, the explanation of what that means
requires a room full of lawyers and a white board. :-) I'd strongly
recommend that you take a look at the alternatives that Aaron pointed you
at.
The good news is the MSDE's replacement, SQL Server 2005 Express, will come
with a GUI administration interface. The bad news is that SQL Server 2005
won't be released until next year.
Q. Can I use SQL Server tools and services in conjunction with MSDE?
A. You can only use SQL Server tools and services in conjunction with
MSDE if you acquired MSDE through SQL Server 2000 (Developer Edition,
Standard Edition, or Enterprise Edition), and if you are using MSDE in
conjunction with a properly licensed copy of SQL Server 2000. Visit the How
to Buy page for information on obtaining a valid SQL Server license.
Note: The tools and services included with SQL Server Developer
Edition may not be used to manage production server environments.
The following utilities are installed by the MSDE setup application
and are provided without restrictions for use with the copy of MSDE that is
installed by your application: bcp.exe, cnfgsvr.exe, dcomscm.exe, osql.exe,
sqlmaint.exe, sqlmangr.exe, scm.exe, sqladhlp.exe, and svrnetcn.exe. The
dtsrun.exe utility is also provided, but can only be used to run existing
Data Transformation Services (DTS) packages against the copy of MSDE
installed by your application; it cannot be used to develop new DTS
packages.

Enterprise Manager

Is Enterprise Manager available as a separate download and installable on a

Are there any similar third-party tools?

No, Enterprise Manager is not free, it's part of the 'big' SQL-Server,
where you have to pay for. You can manage MSDE with EM, yes, but you are
not allowed to copy EM from somebody or to give it away for free. You can
buy a SQL-Server Developer Edition CD from Microsoft (around 60$), this
includes an EM you can use for development.
Or you can use this free tool (can handle SQL2005 too!):
http://sqlmanager.net/en/products/mssql/manager
(the lite version is free)
