Enterprise Manager problem
tab, such as databases or management, it comes back as empty!! Only
rebooting the server will make it come back but then at some point it stops
working again!
Any ideas much appreciated...

Hello Mark,
Have you tried to reinstall the Enterprise Manager?
Have you applied the latest services pack of the SQL Server?
Did this issue only occur on the local server or remote server?
Please try to reinstall the Enterprise Manager and let me know the result.
Sincerely,
Wei Lu

|||Hi Wei Lu,
The problem happens on every client on which Enterprise Manager is
installed. It also happens if I make a remote connection. If we reboot the
server then the problem goes away on all clients but then just comes back
after a few days.
Interestingly, while the server is in this "broken" state, using SQL 2005
Management Studio seems to work with no problems.
Best regards

Enterprise Manager over a VPN gets No items
connected to the LAN I can connect to each and expand the databases tab no
problem. When I try the same over a VPN I find that three of my servers will
connect but on expanding the databases I get a long pause then 'No items'.
I've checked around and found some references to the same problem (SQL
server mag site) but no resolutions. I'm running XP pro and my SQL is sp3.
The three servers in question have only TCP and named pipes in the net lib,
they are all on Win2K one is on sp3, one on sp2 and one is 'out of the box'.
The VPN has ports 1433 and 1434 udp and tcp allowed.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is causing this, its got to be
something simple but I've been looking at this so long now I cant see the
wood for the trees.
Help appreciated. There is a least one known issue that can produce this:

Here are some comments from an MS engineer on it:

Enterprise Manager locks on expanding databases folder
Enterprise Manager.
I expand the databases folder after logging in to our
server and the application goes into 'not responding' mode.
There are about 200 databases to list, so I tried just
putting it in background... for four hours !!!!!
I killed the EM and tried this repeatedly, to no avail.
Does anyone know why this happens and what to do about it?Randy,
Are you on the latest service pack? Assuming its SQL2000, see

Enterprise manager is slow!
When using Enterprise Manager, half of them take around 5
minutes to expand the database tree, while the other half
are fine. The only difference in the computer I can find
is that the slow ones are running Delphi. Is there a
known issue with EM and Delphi? If not, can anyone
suggest things I can try to sort out this problem?

As a troubleshooting step, if you de-install Delphi on one of the problem
clients, then EM loads faster?

Enterprise Manager - Database list hangs
Database list under the server (typically the local server, i.e. the one EM
is installed on) it takes a very long time to respond and sometimes hangs
for over 10 minutes.
The only KB article I could find was referring to a problem with a large
number of databases, whereas these only have about 10-20 databases on them.
I assume it's some sort of name resolution problem - any ideas how to debug
what's happening?

I'll try using the profiler any see if I can see anything - there's no
obvious CPU actvitity whilst it's hanging so I think it might be down to
networking issues of some sort.

Check the service pack version of Enterprise Manager. There was a bug in an
earlier build (before sp3) where EM did a self join of sysdatabases, and if
that was combined with the autoclose option as Sue suggested, it could take
a LONG time to open the list. Make sure you check the version of the tools
on the client machine, not the version of the server. Sometimes people
forget to apply a sp to all the clients.
