Enterprise Manager...where do I get it?
My company is moving to a new dedicated server and we are making the jump to
SQL Server. To start we are going to use the shared SQL server the hosting
company offers, our DB will be on the small side and we did not want to bog
down our new dedicated server.
But the problem is, where in the world do you get Enterprise Manager from?
We are a legit company, so we would prefer not downloading a trial version
of SQL Server, letting it expire and then just use Enterprise Manager.
Is it true that Enterprise Manager comes with Office XP Developers Edition?
Does it come with any other software that MS has that our IT dept. may have,
like MS Server?
Thanks!
MitchHow are you going to develop your software?
You will probably need a local database for that.
You can buy the developer edition (which includes e-m) for about =A350 I think.|||Correct me if I am wrong, but do I not develop the Database and Tables using
Enterprise Manager which is connected to the remote SQL Server at my host?
I would then develop my ASP pages using Macromedia Ultradev.
That seems to be the very same procedure I currently use when developing
with MS Access, except that the Database and Tables are developed locally
and then uploaded to the remote hosting server.
Am I missing something?

Enterprise manager has gone KAPUT!
We have an issue at our company where none of our computers can connect into one of our MSSQL databases. The DB engine is MSSQL 2000(ver 8).
We were able to access this DB through Enterprise Manager last week, but all of a sudden, nobody can interface with the DB anymore. My techy-admin guy doesn't know what happened. We've tried many other programs which are like Enterprise manager, but nothing can connect to this DB. Fortunately, our websites that use this DB can still talk to it fine.
So, does anyone know of anything that might be causing this? I know the information is vague, but thats all I have to work with. We don't have a clue what happened to our Enterprise Manager access to our DB.
Thanks for your suggestions,
Andres G.
To save your data please remove the last backup .bak file to a different server and install SQL Server in another box to see if you can register this server. If you cannot then you may have to run setup and take the repair option this is where the last backup being moved to another server is important, if the repair damage your database you can recreate the database with the.bak file through the backup and restore wizard in Enterprise manager by choosing the restore from device option. There are third party tools you can test drive. Hope this helps.
Enterprise Manager Hangs
from Novell and all our servers were moved from our little domain. We
are seeing a wierd problem with SQLSever since our move. The sever that
has SQL Server is working fine and we are able to register the server in
Enterprise Manager. However, it sits and hangs when trying to browse
the Databases or Management nodes (all other nodes are ok). We can also
get to Query Analyzer and queries against any of the the database tables
work just fine .. UNLESS Query Analyzer tries to browse for the
databases (to populate that database dropdown or display the Object
browser) .. in that case, it sits and hangs.
We have installed Service Pack 4 and this did not resolve the issue.
The hotfix for RAM over 2 gig on the server does not apply in our case.
Has anyone experienced this problem before? We rebooted SQL Server
yesterday and after a couple of reboots, it worked (the Query Analyzer
issue remained), but we are now back to the same issue.
Any clues, suggestions, and of course fixes would be much appreciated!
Thank you!

sp_MsHasDbAccess does not return any result at all .. it simply hangs.
So when I ran profiler while trying to execute it, it shows a bunch of
stuff under my login name and then sits on sp_MsHasDbAccess. (btw, some
of the statements before that was select IS_SRVROLEMEMBER ('sysadmin'),
which returns a 1; SELECT ISNULL(SUSER_SNAME(), SUSER_NAME()) correctly
returns my login name).

Enterprise Manager - SQL Server does not exist or access denied
Hi there,
We have a production server in our environment that I am the only one in the company who is having a problem hitting with Enterprise manager. The server is called 'PRODSQLSRV'. When I ping the server, I get the IP. When I try to connect to it using Enterprise manager, it shows up on the list of available servers, but then when I move it from the left box to the right box of the 'New SQL Server Registration' process, take the rest of the defaults, I get the message 'PRODSQLSRV - SQL Server does not exist or access denied'.
I have checked and I have both TCP/IP and Named Pipes enabled. At the suggestion of the Network admin, I manually typed in the server and domain name as 'PRODSQLSRV.VOLCANO.COM' (all names have been changed to protect the innocent) which is the server name + domain name. With this 'Enterprise manager works fine getting to the server. All this would be fine and good I guess, but none of our vendor written software which accesses that server works on my machine either. And they are not enclined to change their software just for my machine.
If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! - Eric-
I am not sure what is cuasing.. it may be dns resolution issue...
You can add the name in host file or
You can create an alias in sql server "Client Network utility" to resolve this issue.

This posting is provided "as is" with no warranties and confers no rights.|||Paul,
presumably you are talking about the SQL login's password
that you are using to register SQL Server in Enterprise
Manager? If so, then you could use windows authentication
to register the tool.
If you are referring to the SQL Server and/or Agent
Service and their window's logins, then AFAIK there's no
automatic way of resetting them when the password is
changed in AD - the problem is not apparent if you use the
LocalSystem account but this is only viable if you're not
using replication, Exchange mail integration etc.

Enterprise ETL "Appliance"
At least one company has developed such a product. Here's a link: http://www.dataintegrityinstitute.com/copula.htm
I am interested to read your thoughts on this.

Ok. My understanding is that ETL appliances are the wave of the future and that many of these devices work with ETL software tools. Considering that SSIS is an ETL software tool, I am curious as to whether SSIS can work in tandem with such devices. In as much as this is a forum dedicated to SSIS, I believe that any discussion regarding the role of SSIS in the marketplace is indeed relevant to this forum. Since many of the people who visit this forum work in an ETL capacity, I believe that this topic would be of considerable interest to them. I believe that this forum wasn't intended to be strictly focused on SSIS. But rather that this forum was intended to serve an audience who are interested in using SSIS in their overall technical solutions.Phil Brammer wrote:
Duane,
Please tie this post back to SSIS, or it will get deleted. This is an SSIS forum, not a bulletin-board.
If you disagree with anything that I've stated, please feel free to post a reply to that effect.
